Warmer days., a photo by Ianmoran1970 on Flickr.

We've had such a mild 'winter' so far, but today I managed to take a trip down to the beach, see what I could snap, near got blown off my feet for my trouble, a runner much fitter, larger etc. than me actually did.. ouch... time for a sharp exit.

Anyway I thought this snap of my daughter blowing dandelions from a while back made me feel warmer.

Hope you are all doing good.

Have a great weekend.

Treading the light fantastic, Crosby beach, Explore Frontpage

Another from down the beach at Crosby, most of my pictures from here of late have had the Anthony Gormley 'Another Place' statues out of view or as secondary features, but they are responsible for pulling in a quantity of photographers and tourists. They are made iron and each is slowly developing a personality over time, each spending more or less time in the water, some are clean, some have a skin of rust and others are covered in barnacles.

Here's another taking a shallow paddle in the reflected light of a sunset, before taking a dip in the evening tide.

Thanks for looking

The Golden Path, Crosby, a photo by Ianmoran1970 on Flickr.

A shot from my muddy boots evening at Crosby beach last year.

Have pushed the processing to bring out a little more drama for this one, I like the contrast of both colour and light, and the snake of water leading you out to sea with the windfarm to the right of frame, hope you find it agreeable.

Have a great day.

Another 'Another place' ironman shot from Crosby beach.

Shot this evening, there was a fire up in Hightown, the grass looked as if it was on fire??... anybody know more?

A quick shot of a pair of my anaglyph 3D glasses, with the filtered light falling on a piece of gallerie gold fibre silk baryta paper, which annoyingly I managed to print an email on, an annoying mistake, but anyway I digress.

A reprocessed and rebalanced shot from the muddy boot session archives.

I wanted to change the colour balance, but I've also tweaked curves and done a little dodging, no doubt over the top, but on my monitor it looked kind of interesting and has some added drama, which I tend to like, see what you think..

Big ship sails into the river Mersey watched over by the Ironmen of Crosby

In shot is the 22,000 tonne Panama registered cargo vessel 'Sv Nikolay'.
Don’t really know if you would describe this as a big ship... but I would, it did look to be large and lightly laden riding high in the water, the pooled water left by the leaving tide, left a mirrored surface for reflection, and the Ironmen looked on as to greet the ship into the river Mersey.
I quite liked the painted feel to the cloud backdrop here, I think these would have been perfect light and conditions to have seen tall ships in, oh well the less romantic bulk cargo ship will have to do.

If you want to track ships, this makes it easy, you can see where this ship is now, and what its doing...

Steps, Liverpool, a photo by Ianmoran1970 on Flickr.

Shot of steps outside the Liverpool Echo arena taken from the Liverpool Wheel, I like wheels but have to admit to feeling a little uneasy about looking down from heights like this.

I quite like the patterns made by the paving here, I think it had been damp but drying in the sun which also helps the texture, I had a few with people in shot which adds interest, but this one keeps it simple.

Kind of a high altitude abstract.

Washed up, Crosby., a photo by Ianmoran1970 on Flickr.

In the process of being washed up on Crosby beach, a Jelly fish and the receding wave that is leaving him high and dry.

It’s amazing how many jelly fish are left on the beach, usually in groups which makes me think that there are whole multigenerational families that have all ended up snuffed out on the beach having caught the wrong wave, but that kind of seems odd in some respects, I’m sure I read they have no brains, but in which case I expect they didn’t see this coming.

Coastguard station, Crosby

It has been known for a little while that ten coastguard stations across the uk are 'at risk'. The suggestion being that we should have just three 24-hour national stations – at Southampton, Dover and Aberdeen.

Crosby has been fighting to keep its station, and recently
a cross-party transport select committee has suggested that the proposal could have devastating and deadly consequences on the Mersey coastline.

While there are many being made 'at risk' in these times, from what you can gather, most dont leave lives at risk.

Been trying to clean up my harddrive, this one shows the station behind the car park at Burbo bank and the comms tower, set against the mile marker on the beach.

Greenbelt conservation or progress?, Crosby

Conservation or progress?

I’m lucky enough to live in a conservation area, there’s some nice large old houses and its all rather peaceful.

In between our conservation area and the historic Little Crosby, are public footpaths crossing green belt land, Crosby hall and fields of green.

One of Sefton councils ideas for its strategic housing plan, is to build more than 200 houses on this green belt land.

People that are within 50 metres of the ‘site’ have been given letters, but most of the walkers and people in the area are unlikely to be aware of what is being considered.

Currently under review is the Seftons core strategy for housing. Apparently the population since 1981 has fallen by 26,800 people, while 14,000 more homes being built. Current vacant dwelling rate is 4.6 and there are swathes of houses waiting to be demolished to make way for new property.

Despite lack of demand and current vacant stock, future requirements are due to the trend of smaller households.

Personally I don’t think it could possible to keep the walks and the character, and it is bound to upset the rich wildlife we have, I remember the first morning that we spent in our house, when a Red Squirrel was literally knocking on our bedroom window, other wildlife we have here include Bats and Pheasants.

Assuming these properties are required, I imagine they need to go somewhere, question is a green belt site in historic setting, between two conservation areas the place to put them...

Anyway, in shot is a snap from the field that is proposed to become a housing estate, the watercolour look to this is purely from dof on my nice lens, as the camera saw it, not photoshop.

And I got through that without mentioning my Entry in the Manfrotto comp :)

Went out to test some new filters, long way to go with them... anyways... came back with some field shots, I was thinking that this was all about the contrast between the land and the power that we have harnessed for our purposes, and the untameable weather backdrop beyond, well I don’t know if I can put in to words what I mean, so in shot is a field in Sefton looking at pylons coming from the power station in Fiddlers ferry.

Something new to house the past.

One of the modern structures that have sprung in to being over recent years, controversially next to the more classic structures that make the three Graces, long standing pillar stones of the world famous and grade I listed waterfront. A clearly modern design that sits in contrast to the previous structures in the area.

I like it and I’m looking forward to visiting with the family, following the official opening in July 2011.

Dreams. (another shot in comments)

The Graphics Processing Unit of a well known console, this chip is capable of taking crystallized data and breathing life into worlds bounded pretty much only by the imaginations and creativity of programmers and artists, and rendering them for the real world to be interacted with.

I love the idea that in photography we try and crystallize and capture the real world. I like that the concept that the GPU is kind of the reverse of the camera.

Saddly this console was destined for the bin, having expired, I was suprised to see that the major chips, CPU and GPU have a mirror like finish.

In shot is an extremly powerful and versitile GPU with its daughter 10 MB eDRAM catching some light on the PCB.

Field of dreams, HCS, a photo by Ianmoran1970 on Flickr.

My 7 year old son decided that he would like to go and take some pictures, wow, great, that never happens, people usually cringe when I suggest going out because it normally means the camera comes with.

So there were these horses down the road, we've fed them before, and that would make something different and possibly more interesting than the beach to shoot for him, so off we went.
Unfortunately despite seeing several horses in the distance, it seems like the road side horses had gone, so we stopped at a field of bright yellow rape, he seemed happy enough, and the sun tends to keep things interesting.

A clichéd shot here that I picked up while the little one happily ran about and snapped away.

Bottled it?, HMM!

Bottled it?, HMM! by Ianmoran1970
Bottled it?, HMM!, a photo by Ianmoran1970 on Flickr.

Ok so this was my second entry into Macromondays this week, my first double entry for a good while, and I've actually only done this beacause it was pointed out that my first wasnt technically a macro shot.. I agree, so I've removed that and this is something that is more likley to be classed as a macro shot, hope you dont mind.

Anyway, bottles are great, and this is one I've had for a while, not sure if its been used in a shot before, but it was to hand and trying to combine this with a cream egg does seem like an odd thing to do, but there are a couple of egg in bottle things that I've heared of before.

1. pickled eggs, why anyone would want to do such a thinh is beyond me, but then many things are.

2. The experiment where you can get a hard boiled egg in a bottle, more interesting to me, pretty pointless, but a neat trick.. ( you burn the oxygen off with a match or two, and the egg will be sucked into the bottle)

The egg, the currently very popular chocolate cream egg, here is only distorted by the glass of the bottle, and its shape is totally retained, but I imagine the experiment that works for hard boiled eggs work for them not the chocolate type.

Chance, another chance in comments

Something I’ve been wanting to try for a while here, I wondered if there might be mileage in flipping a reverse shot of a bottle so you get the liquid effectively in front of any lettering that might appear on the bottle, so as well as changing perspective, you can get detail reflections.

I think it is a technique that might be interesting to try a few more things with, but here are a couple of test shots.

Oh nearly forgot, I've touched these to remove the well known leading brand name, so you may have seen this bottle before with the additional lettering.

Theres another shot on flickr if you fancy clicking through!

Thanks so much for looking.

Sun and moon diptych. by Ianmoran1970
Sun and moon diptych., a photo by Ianmoran1970 on Flickr.

Another couple of basic shots, pretty much SOOC handheld shots, the idea was to upload 100% crop versions but the sun really demanded a wider format so, unless you can see these large I guess they are less than 50% crops as you see them on screen.

The bird in shot was probably the same as seen in the recent Subtle Waterloo sunset, I think the shot against sun makes a nice sillouette with the light bleeding through, I hope to show the full image that this was from, but unfotunatly there are some composition problems.

Here's to hoping the weather smiles on you this year. Have a great day.

Beached Aguila, Crosby. Explored

Been trying to find an interesting shot for the HTTT group, this caught my eye on the beach.

An Aguila bottle, which I believe is a spanish beer?.. seemingly had made its way to be beached at Crosby.... Not sure if we have any ferries that would stock this beer or if it had traveled somehow by its self, reckon that less likley though..

I had previously spotted a tonne of cans that had been left littering the dunes, but at the same time I took the shot of the Waterloo sunset it became apparent that this area is a party zone for youngsters... reckon this would be nice to photograph if I didnt fear for the saftey of me and my gear.

Toothbrush, HMM + HSS!

Toothbrush, HMM + HSS! by Ianmoran1970
Toothbrush, HMM + HSS!, a photo by Ianmoran1970 on Flickr.

A shot of a toothbrush, it seems a nice plain straight toothbrush is hard to come by these days.

Maybe these curves do help clean teeth, not sure, but still interesting to photograph.

So what I had in mind was imitation of a classic photo of toothpaste on a brush.. however along with the straight lines it appears toothpaste is watered down, probably makes it easier to get out of the dispenser, once we had nice metal tubes that you needed to have hulk like strength to press out the dried up paste, inevitably the tube would used to split and the paste came out the sides.... even when you did squeeze from the end.

So today toothpaste didn’t seem to be able to support itself on the brush. I used focus to abstract the toothpaste which still seems to have some nice shape with the colours.

I think the image I had in mind would be considered classic pop art... in this instance I just hope you like this enough for me to validly claim that it is popular.

Alt, Crosby, a photo by Ianmoran1970 on Flickr.

Yet another odd one from my harddrive, I remember writing a comment ready for this but bottled out from uploading a while back, what I liked when I was on the beach was the step cut out by the running water of the river Alt running off of the beach, it looked quite dramatic, all though you can see the step to the right of frame, it doesn’t come across as dramatic as it felt, my boots were sinking into the soft sand and I feared that all though I was quite excited about it, if I had gotten the picture I wanted... it would have been lost to the sinking sand, so this is what I bought back....

Unsure shots from Crosby

Wispy sky, Crosby

So in shot is a simple bit of post sundown cloud reflected in the wet sand at Crosby with the wind farm off in the distance.
Shot at Crosby beach from a little while back, another one that I thought there might be something in it to process out, this is the version that I was least unhappy with, so hope you think it is ok

Messy, Crosby beach.

Another One I want sure about and used a crop in beach slide a little while back, after a bit of stormy weather the beach bad way more debris on than usual, these are crushed up shells stones, and other debris left by the tide, all catching some early aftersun.

Like pebbles on a beach, Crosby

Like pebbles on a beach, not usually seen at Crosby, I think these were more like odd stones and stuff.
